Open project pageWETH9 is an ERC-20 wrapper for native ETH. A user deposits ETH and the contract mints the same amount of WETH; withdraw burns WETH and returns ETH. Backing ETH sits in the contract, so the peg is mechanical rather than market-made. Native ETH predates ERC-20, so DeFi apps use this adapter for approve and transferFrom.
